2015 Annual Conference Speakers

Jeffrey A. Bates, PharmD, CGP

Dr. Bates is an Interim Assistant Dean at the Ferris State University College of Pharmacy, entering his 11th year of full-time service.  He also functions as the Director of Student Professional and Academic Success for the College.  Most of his classroom energies have centered on Clinical Communication, Self-Care and Over-the-Counter Medication Therapeutics, Geriatrics, Pharmacy Practice Skills, and Academic Pharmacy.  In 2013, he founded the Ferris Pharmacy Care Clinic and facilitates experiential learning in that clinic as well as in Ferris’ Interdisciplinary Diabetes Clinic, local student-run Health Fairs, etc.  In addition to didactic and experiential learning, Dr. Bates also helps to advise dozens of students each year regarding emotional, physical, financial, relational, and spiritual balance in their lives.  Prior to joining Ferris' College of Pharmacy faculty, Dr. Bates employed his clinical expertise to improve clinical outcomes in geriatric patients residing in skilled nursing centers around Michigan.

He and his wife, Sheryl, have three adopted children and have been licensed Foster Parents in Michigan for 8 years.  They are thrilled to call Big Rapids, Michigan their home.

Jeffrey Copeland, BS, ThM, PharmD

Dr. Jeffrey Copeland is an ordained Baptist Minister, a Registered Pharmacist, and a former United States Army Captain.  His beloved wife, Julie, is a Registered Dietitian.  Julie and Jeff are the parents of two wonderful boys, Nathan and Matthew.  He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Berry College, a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Mercer University, and a Master of Theology degree from Dallas Theological Seminary.  Jeff is the Assistant Dean of Experiential Programs, Associate Professor in Pharmacy Practice, and the CPFI Student Chapter Advisor at the University of the Incarnate Word, Feik School of Pharmacy in San Antonio, Texas.  

Anne E. Clay, BS Pharm, RPh, Missionary


Anne is a North Carolina native and received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Pharmacy in 1993. Upon graduation she joined the U.S. Public Health Service. She served with the Indian Health Service in Tahlequah, Oklahoma for seven years. After changing agencies, she served with the Federal Bureau of Prisons at the Federal Medical Center in Butner, NC for three years. In 2004, she fulfilled a lifelong dream by becoming a fulltime missionary with TEAMS for Medical Missions. She serves as the medical coordinator at the home office of TEAMS in Allentown, PA. She procures and processes medicines and supplies needed for quarterly mission trips to Jamaica.  In Jamaica, she serves as the lead pharmacist and as Medical Coordinator for each trip. This provides continuity and qualified oversight to the medical side of the work.

Fred M. Eckel, BS, MS, ScD (Hon)

 

Fred Eckel is Executive Director Emeritus of the North Carolina Association of Pharmacists and Adjunct Professor of Pharmacy at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill Eshelman School of Pharmacy.

Fred grew up in Philadelphia where he graduated from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science.  He earned his M.S. Degree and Residency in Hospital Pharmacy from The Ohio State University School of Pharmacy and Hospitals.  He received an Honorary Doctor of Science Degree from the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia in May 2009.   Fred is a pharmacist by choice, commitment and concern.  He has worked in community and hospital pharmacy.  He served as Director of Pharmacy at the UNC Hospitals from 1968 to 1975.  Fred is a past president of ASHP, NCSHP, and the North Carolina Center for Pharmaceutical Care for which he currently serves as Executive Director.  Fred is Editor-in-Chief of Pharmacy Times and has contributed over 250 articles and editorials to the pharmacy literature.  He is a frequent speaker at pharmacy meetings, having spoken in every U.S. state and on all inhabited continents.

Fred’s wife, Peggy, is a nurse; his daughter, Sarah, and son, Stephen, practice pharmacy.  Fred’s faith is important to him.  He continues to teach a Sunday School class each week and serves as President of Christian Pharmacists Fellowship International.

Fred is considered a pharmacy futurist.  You may not agree with him, but he will make you think.  Be prepared to be challenged, stimulated, and quickened.

Barry Ewy, PharmD, JD, MHA


Dr. Ewy is currently the CEO of Blessings International, a non-profit international pharmaceutical repackager and wholesaler, where he is responsible for operational and financial leadership including all aspects of product sourcing and meeting current Good Manufacturing Practices. He works with short term teams traveling worldwide as well as long term clinics to assess their product needs.

Dr. Ewy has also served as the CEO of a specialty acute care hospital, a Director of Pharmacy, and had a private law practice for several years.  Over the last 15 years, he has presented lectures on pharmacy and health care law, policy and procedure development, and organizational structure and control.

Dr. Ewy earned his Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Pharmacy; his Juris Doctor from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, School of Law; and his Master of Health Administration from A.T. Still University.

Joy Greene, PharmD



Dr. Joy Greene is a native of North Carolina who received her Pharm.D. degree from UNC in 1998.  Joy worked in community pharmacy for seven years before joining the Academy.  She taught at Wingate University from 2005-2011.  In 2011, God called Joy and her family to move to Jackson Tennessee where she taught at Union University until June, 2014.  God opened up an opportunity for Joy and her family to return to NC in July of 2014 when she accepted an Assistant Dean position at the new High Point University School of Pharmacy.  Joy has been married to her husband, Bryan, for 18 years and they have two children.  Joy and her family are members of Green Street Baptist Church in High Point.
Joy has a radio/speaking ministry called Joytime Ministries.  "Joytime" is a one minute Christian radio feature that airs on over 100 radio stations worldwide and Joy speaks regularly at women's events.  You can learn more about Joytime Ministries at www.joytime.org.

Ronald A. Herman, MSc, PhD

 

Professor Herman is a three-time graduate of the University of Iowa College of pharmacy.  He received his Bachelor of Pharmacy degree in 1976 and his Master of Science in Pharmacy in 1978.  Then he and his wife traveled to Southern Africa where during the days of apartheid he was involved in training pharmacists in one of the homelands in that area.  After an enjoyable and fruitful 6 years of work and ministry there he, his wife, and daughter returned to Iowa City where he pursued a Ph.D. in pharmacokinetics.  Upon completion of 7 years of study, he worked at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for 2 years in a surgical intensive care unit pharmacy.  He then joined the faculty of the College of Pharmacy in 1994 and has been there ever since.  For 7 years he cared for patients in the Burn Treatment Center, and since 2001 he has been director of the Iowa Drug Information Network. Professor Herman has also been active in Christian Pharmacists Fellowship International over the past 25-plus years where he has served in many roles and is currently the Executive Director.  He serves on the Global Health Outreach (GHO) Advisory Council as a pharmacy representative.  He has participated in 10 short-term GHO primary medical care mission trips to Zambia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Afghanistan, Nicaragua and Mexico.

Daniel A. Hussar, PhD




Daniel A. Hussar is the Remington Professor of Pharmacy at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia.  He is a member of a number of professional organizations including the American Pharmacists Association, American Society of Health-system Pharmacists, Drug Information Association, and the Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association.  He has served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the American Pharmacists Association, and is a Past President of the Drug Information Association and the Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association.  He has served on the Board of Directors of World Vision and currently serves as the Honorary President of the American Pharmacists Association and on the Board of Directors of Christian Pharmacists Fellowship International.

Dr. Hussar teaches the Nonprescription Therapeutics course, coordinates the Pharmacy Law and Ethics course, and is a participant in the Pharmacotherapeutics courses at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy.  His primary interests are in the areas of new drugs, drug interactions, and issues facing the profession of pharmacy, and he has written and spoken extensively on these subjects.  For many years he has published articles in several professional journals on the new medications that have been marketed in the United States. He serves as the Author/Editor of The Pharmacist Activist newsletter. 

Eugene Lutz, BS Pharm, FAPhA


Eugene M. Lutz, is co-owner of Lutz Pharmacist Services, a consulting and relief pharmacist firm in Altoona, Iowa.  He is past president of the Iowa Pharmacy Association and the American Pharmacists Association-Academy of Pharmacy Practice and Management.(APhA-APPM) and is a Fellow of APhA.  Gene served two terms on the APhA Board of Trustees and as President of APhA (2004-2006).  He also served two terms on the APhA Foundation Board of Directors (2008-2014).  Lutz recently completed his second term on the Christian Pharmacists Fellowship International Board of Directors (2008-2014). He has also been active internationally as a member of the Executive Committee of the Community Pharmacy Section of Federation of International Pharmacy (FIP) 2006 to 2014 (two terms). Gene and his wife Susan owned and operated Lutz Pharmacy and Lutz Long Term Care Pharmacy in Altoona for more than 37 years (1974-2012)

Tom Martin, PharmD, BCPS, CDE

 

Tom received his Bachelor of Science and Doctorate degrees in Pharmacy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Pharmacy.  He completed a Post-doctorate Residency at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.  He is a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist, a Certified Diabetes Educator, and a Diplomat of the National Asthma &   Respiratory Training Center.  He is a Clinical Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Pharmacy, an Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice at the Wingate University School of Pharmacy, and an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Gardner-Webb University in the School of Nursing and the Physician Assistant Program.  He spent 11 years as the Pharmaceutical Care Coordinator for Critical Care at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center before moving to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte where he spent 8 years as the Pharmacy Clinical Specialist for Critical Care.  He currently serves as the Clinical Pharmacist with the Carolina Community Health Partnership Network of Community Care of North Carolina and as a Consultant Pharmacist for several companies and clinics.  He and his wife, Jill, have three sons, Kip, Kelvin, and Patrick.  

Joseph A. Rogowski, RPh, MA (Public Policy)

 

Joseph A. Rogowski is native of Buffalo, New York where he graduated from the School of Pharmacy at the University of Buffalo, 1959. He met his wife Ursula while she was visiting from Germany on an extended vacation and they were married in 1963. It was at a Full Gospel Businessmen’s meeting in 1977 that Joseph had a life transforming experience in Jesus Christ. After a successful career as a pharmacist and partner in a regional chain of pharmacies in Western New York, he resigned his career in 1981 and left with Ursula and their two children for the mission field with Youth with a Mission. They served in Asia and the Pacific for approximately ten years.

While on staff of the YWAM-University of Nations at Kona, Hawaii, Joseph developed a seminar on community development that eventually launched him into a teaching ministry that brought him invitations to speak in fourteen different nations. Following a physical setback in 1992, Joseph and his wife returned to the Richmond, Virginia area, where he worked and retired from pharmacy. While employed as a pharmacist, Joseph earned a Master’s degree in Public Policy through studies at Regent University. Joseph continues to perform a teaching ministry abroad which focuses on the principles of helping the poor in community development and on Biblical worldview and culture. He and Ursula have three grandchildren.

Mollie Ashe Scott, PharmD, BCACP, CPP

Dr. Mollie Ashe Scott received her BS in Biology from Meredith College and her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of North Carolina School of Pharmacy.  She completed an ASHP-Accredited Specialty Residency in Geriatrics at the Durham VAMC in Durham, NC. 

Dr. Scott has practiced in ambulatory family medicine with a focus on geriatrics since 1997, and initiated pharmacist-managed clinics at Duke Family Medicine Cente,r and MAHEC Family Health Center.   She has practiced as a Clinical Pharmacist Practitioner since 2001, and provides ambulatory care pharmacy services at MAHEC Family Health Center which is recognized as a level III Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH).  Her interests include innovative ambulatory care practice, osteoporosis, and generational differences.

Dr. Scott is currently the Regional Associate Dean for UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy – Asheville Satellite, and has dual appointments in pharmacy and medicine at UNC.

Virgil Van Dusen, BS Pharm, RPh, JD


Virgil Van Dusen is the Bernhardt Professor of Pharmacy in the College of Pharmacy at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, Oklahoma. He is a graduate of the College of Pharmacy at Southwestern Oklahoma State University and The University of Tulsa College of Law. He has taught at Southwestern for over 20 years, five of which were as a clinical instructor. Prior to joining Southwestern he practiced extensively as both a pharmacist and an attorney. Courses that he teaches include pharmacy law, ethics and leadership.

Dr. Van Dusen has authored numerous articles dealing with legal and management issues related to pharmacy practice. His articles have appeared in such journals as the American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education, Journal of the American Pharmacists Association, Hospital Pharmacy, Journal of Pharmacy Technology, U.S. Pharmacist, Pharmacy Times, Drug Topics and America’s Pharmacist. He has presented research at both state and national conferences and is frequently invited as a speaker for pharmacy organizations.

2015 Worship Leaders

Wagdy W. Wahba, PhD

Dr. Wahba graduated from Alexandria University, College of Pharmacy with a BS in Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Chemistry. After his graduation, he purchased his own drug store in Alexandria, Egypt, where he practiced retail pharmacy.  Dr. Wahba joined Duquesne University, School of Pharmacy, in Pittsburgh as a research associate. After earning his Ph.D. in pharmacology and toxicology in 1972, he worked as a forensic toxicologist at the crime laboratory of Allegheny County. In August 1995, Dr. Wahba and his family moved to Hamilton Ontario, Canada where he established and worked as a manager of the first Drug Information Center at McMaster Medical Center. He returned to Pittsburgh in September 1997 and re-joined the Allegheny County Crime Laboratory to work as a forensic toxicologist.  He was promoted to the position of manager of the toxicology section and continued serving there for thirteen years. During his tenure as a forensic toxicologist, Dr. Wahba taught pharmacology and toxicology on a part-time basis at two universities and one college in the Pittsburgh area. Dr. Wahba is still available as a forensic toxicology expert witness in civil and criminal court cases. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Forensic Toxicology.

Since August 2001, Dr. Wahba has been a faculty member at Palm Beach Atlantic University as an associate professor. He thoroughly enjoys teaching at a Christian School of Pharmacy where integration of faith is an integral part of the curriculum. He serves as the Director of Spiritual Programs at the school.  His teaching responsibilities include co-teaching in the “Pharmacotherapy” courses as well as in “Principles of Drug Action I & II”. He also teaches in the areas of spirituality in healthcare and clinical toxicology.          

Jennifer Sands, BS Pharmacy

When Jennifer’s husband was killed in the World Trade Center on 9/11, no one would have convinced her that anything good could ever come out of such an unthinkable tragedy. But she has since learned that God is able to do exceedingly more than we can imagine when we put our trust in Him:  God used 9/11 as a catalyst to bring Jennifer to faith in Christ. She is now determined to share her story of God’s grace and her message of trusting Him and His Word. Jennifer’s story has been featured on many national media outlets and she’s the author of three books: A Tempered Faith, A Teachable Faith, and A Treasured Faith. She is a popular retreat speaker and regularly addresses many audiences with her powerful, Bible-centered messages. She also leads tours to Israel and enjoys introducing people to the Holy Land. Jennifer is a 1989 pharmacy graduate of Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. She still works part-time for an independent pharmacy in New Jersey, but the majority of her time is devoted to Christian writing and speaking on a local, national, and international basis.
